Science.

Now that I chose to speak. Let's talk straight.
I hate science. Period. But, I can never do arts, they are way too tough. I'm glad I wasn't allowed to do arts, I wouldn't get through. It's not easy. Now, you must be wondering what do I want to do then? You'll know by the end of this post.
Being a science student (and not a very good one at that), I can tell science is easy if you are hard working(Note-I am making statements based purely on my immediate society, not globally). Among all 40-50 science students that I've come across, there are hardly 3-4 who are actually passionate about the subjects. The rest are like me. I always used to wonder why would anyone want to do Engineering? I mean it is such a BORING profession. And I figured, we study to get jobs. Not to learn. It makes me cry to think how these corporate institutes commercialized education. How everything is just a matter of business. It's a pity that law has a competitive entrance exam now. Competitive exams. HORRIBLE concept. Let's not go to education system, I can go on forever. Coming back, I have immense respect for art students. I know how hard you need to work. Contrary to what majority of people think, it cant be done overnight. You really need to refer and research to excel. But, there's one thing that bothers me, how can philosophy be taught? How can that be a subject. Isn't that something you need to find for yourself? Anyway, that's something totally different.
I was talking to my sister LONG ago and we figured there are 3 kinds of people who take up engineering:
1. People who think it's the safest way to settle in life.
2. People who are made to.
3. People who are actually into it. [5-10%]
I fal into the second category. But, I am okay with it. I know for sure I am not going to be an Engineer. At least, I hope so. I mean I like computers (that's my stream btw). I like learning languages and want to learn how to create games and pages. I am interested. But, I don't want to sit in front of the computer for 8 hours a day and code all day. That's not my idea of job satisfaction. There are other things I want to do.
I wanna be a photographer, not cause I click great pictures, heck I don't even have a good enough camera, but I find pictures amusing. I can stare at a brilliantly clicked picture for hours and make up a million stories in my mind.
I wanna be a teacher, it's not an easy job. I've seen my mother go through more work pressure than my dad. Handling 40-odd children at a time is not easy.
More than anything, I want to be independent. Tomorrow, I can work as a greeting card writer and still have my self-esteem intact, as long as I am happy. I know that.
But, if I work as an engineer and someone asks me why am I doing this, I know I won't have an answer. I won't be as proud of it as I would be as a greeting-card writer. I'm not saying it's a low job, it just doesn't get you enough money, something that should make one proud, apparently.
So, I think I made myself clear. To myself, that is.
:]
And for the next 4 years, I would just try to have my "college fun" and study at the same time and get a degree for the name-sake.
And after that, I hope I'll have my say. Guess I won't be too "immature to make my own decisions" then.

I am writing this cause I had this conversation with a very irritating guy I know.
Engineering huh?
Oh yes!
And you are happy about it?
*pause*
Yeah.

He's doing something that he always loved.
And damn right, am jealous.

Thank you.
Akshara.

what do you mean? do you think this only applies to art students?
I guess this is your opinion and I have no say, but I feel engineering is an art too.

  2. I was talking about the what people think about art students. Heck! My relatives don't even consider any other subjects apart from math, bio, phy and chem. They think you are doing some housewife course, if you know what I mean. They think it's darn easy-like you can write an exam without preparing.
And engineering, that's a whole different world to you Arun. Now, in a year, out of 4 lac people who are pursuing engineering, a couple of thousands get quality education like you do. Honestly, when you tell me engineering is an art. I can't help but smile. Cause I really don't understand. I topped my exams without having an idea as to what am writing in physics and chemistry. We don't have to read and research like you guys, when we reach 4th year, we need to do a project. And we have agencies which will do these projects. It's all business here. Now, you get what I mean? It's not the same for both of us.
Maybe I am wrong. But that's all the perspective I have.
Before you, I haven't met a science student who really knows why they are doing it. And am happy that you are doing what you want to. I am not against science or people who are pursuing it. I am just saying that arts is equally hard.
